New Reading App: Guilt-Free Screen-time for Your Budding Reader

Child lying down enjoying reading app

The reading app that’s fun and educational

Child enjoying reading appKeeping my five year-old busy always seems to be the most challenging, especially because I try to avoid plopping him in front of a screen when at all possible. These days, it seems like that’s almost impossible. So imagine the excitement when I found the perfect reading app that’s fun and educational. Who can argue with guilt-free screen time?!

Prior to finding this gem, I’d put all types of educational apps on his tablet and hope that he’d stay busy long enough for me to finish at least one task. For the most part, it was short-lived and I refused to let him sit and watch kids unboxing on YouTube for hours. After some serious trial and error and a little research, I uncovered this little gem, Read with Phonics. It’s a phonics-based learn-to-read-app and website that has stolen my heart. More importantly, it has gained the attention of my busy five-year old. Not only does he enjoy this reading app, he often asks if he can “play” his reading game. Now that’s a win in my book.

Not convinced? I don’t blame you, but here’s why the Read with Phonics app was crowned guilt-free screen time app of the year.

Its intuitive, even for a kid

It’s never helpful when you have to stop and explain complicated directions to child. If you have to explain to a child how to use an app created for a child, that’s a problem. As a lover of all things UX, its one of the first things I consider when looking at apps for my kids. It’s a no-brainer.

It plays up phonics versus sight words

There is more to reading than sight words. Don’t get me wrong, sight words are important when it comes to learning to read, but reading is more than just sight words. If a young reader can effectively string together a group of sounds they can read almost anything, and the Reading with Phonics app has that covered.

Reinforcement without redundancy

Reading app uses repetition to learn phonics

Repetition is key and this app manages to repeat concepts while being sure to package it in multiple ways. Simple, but pretty smart when you take into consideration the audience, I mean anyone who has been around a kid for more than five minutes knows holding the attention of young budding minds is a tall order.

Ignites competition

Reading app tracks progress Competition is good, it helps to build a child’s confidence. And even in the most unlikely tiny competitor the positive scoring excites, keeps them engaged and enthusiastic about doing even better the next go round. It’s an equation that’s made for success.

If you’ve been looking for an educational app that promotes reading with phonics, or can’t decide on the perfect holiday gift for the kid who has everything, you simply must give the Read with Phonics app a try. It’s available on Apple iTunes, Google Play and Amazon.

If you follow me on Instagram, keep your eyes peeled for an opportunity to win a discount code to download the app for free.

Either way, do yourself and your child a favor and get Read with Phonics. You won’t be disappointed. I mean seriously, how can you say no to guilt-free screen time for your budding reader?

Once you give it a whirl, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I’ve never heard of this app but I’m excited to give it a try. My 5 year old tends to rush through words when reading so hopefully this will help!

  2. Ive never heard of this app, but this would be perfect for my daughter because all day every day she insists on watching youtube. I feel she is learning things that aren’t very educational right now, so this would be perfect!

    1. Yup, YouTube can take over. This app is a great alternative to entertainment and learning. Try out it out, I’d love to hear what you think about it.

  3. Thank you for sharing! I will give it a try, my 5 year old loves the ipad but gets bored quickly with some games and I hate him to be all day in You tube.
