This week has been rough. I’ve received texts, and phone calls and seen so many friends and colleagues post about recent layoffs. Having been laid off twice in my career, I remember how it feels trying to figure out, “What’s next?” For those of us who are watching in disbelief, I urge you to lend a helping hand. If you’re not sure how here are a few things I was thankful for when I was laid off. Here are a few tips on supporting friends when layoffs occur:
1. Stay Connected: Spirits are low. We all internalize things differently. A quick text or call could be just the thing they need to feel connected. You’d be surprised how much of a difference a supportive conversation can make.
Cheat Code: (This one is for my Android users😜) Life gets busy and we get caught up in our own things. So to make sure you don’t forget, schedule that check-in text. The colleague will be happy to receive it and reply and that will get the convo started, leaving you with one less thing to remember.
2. Give Recommendations: (Sometimes this one gets long eye rolls) I know we are all busy, but this one is really helpful, it can be a LinkedIn endorsement, permission to list as a reference on an application, a full written recommendation or all three.
Cheat Code: Have the person you’re writing the recommendation for provide a loose outline of what they would like you to highlight. This takes the hard part of getting started (writer’s block is real), off of you and gives you a starting point while focusing on the things they need highlighted for said new role. Just in case there’s a question, only highlight those things you can speak to.
3. Share relevant job postings: I feel like this one goes without saying. If you come across job opportunities that align with their skills and experience, share the information with them. Don’t assume they’ve already seen it.
Cheat Code: Most employers send out announcements with open reqs. Do a quick scan of your Open Roles email, to see if there’s anything that may align and share.
I’m sure everyone has their own set of tips. What did I miss?
